Project Overview

I will be using Logic Pro and the producer I will be working with will be using studio FL to create a Collaboration track. I will be helping NewfoundJungle to firstly produce the track and then over the course of the next few weeks I will be EQing it, adding vocals, and mixing the vocals using tools such like reverb, delay, and compressors. This is going to be a striped back track, All the instruments will be electronic and we will possibly add sound effects. This will be my 1st time working with an Electronic trap Soul-R&B Producer.

Week 1- First studio session

So me and Newfound Jungle had our 1st studio session where we discussed and exchanged ideas-

I thought this would be a great collaboration because it really brings my chilled out laid back neo soul  side of my voice that's not belting, for this track i really I want to create quite a sparse almost haunting atmospheric effect.

We both found some references/inspiration tracks:

Inspiration artist research - NewFoundJungle and I decided to do some research on 'Her' who is a R&B/Soul Artist, we are both inspired by her work, she has her own unique take on soul R&B, we also love her use of politics in some of her lyrics but we also just love how genuine her writing is you will hear this when you listen to some of her work. She uses distinct electronic drum beats that stand out from the rest of trap/electronic music today, and her uses of instrumentation is just so inspiring; for example in her song 'Focus' she uses a Harp which is on a loop throughout the song which I think is just completely unique as you normally wouldn't hear a harp used in popular music today.

HER- Focus

I love how the vocals are mixed in the song I also love the obvious delay/reverb on the vocals, the harmonies that are quite low in the mix, the harp creates quite a dreamy romantic effect that is quite compelling.

Alina Baraz- Lavender and Velvet

This is a chilled out R&B track, we both said that we loved the samples and loops in this track. We also liked how the instrument in the intro sounds like it's tuned differently.

Sabrina Claudio- confidently lost

We loved her almost haunting vocal and the vibe that the track gives. We also took note of the higher harmony on some of the vocal lines and how much of a haunting effect it had on the song. We also took note of how soft and effortless her vocals sounded.

Week 2

In Today's session we created a chord sequence loop with some atmospheric rain sound effects and electronic drums, this gave me inspiration to write a chorus melody line with lyrics, I thought it was quite catchy and through that is where I came up with the song title ‘How Could You’.

Below is a picture of the chords.

These are the chords that we came up with. We used a sound that tunes the piano differently for a unique twist.

We both came out of todays session really positive and are really excited to see what we will make out of this.

Week 3-

Due to me and NewFoundJungle unable to find a time to book a studio to finish the track I was sent the mastered audio file so I could record vocals in my mini home studio set up.

This was a challenge for me as I hadn't really produced myself before and was excited to accept the challenge. As the song is very short I did one whole take, double tracked it then triple tracked it.

Referring back to our research I really wanted to grasp that haunting effect, so I started to mix my vocals starting by eqing them which lead me to start messing around will different types of compressors, reverbs and delays to see how I could bring the best out of my vocals. After messing around with different reverbs there was still something missing, so referring back to our reference tracks I took inspiration from artist Sabrina Claudio and recorded a high harmony to support the chorus. I then panned my tripple tracked vocals to give them a bigger sound.

I feel as though my mixing skills are quite weak, due to the fact I'm not a producer but I have been teaching myself a few things to build my skills up

Week 4-

The picture on the right is the cover art for our single, its simple but sweet and represents both me and NewFoundJungles style. We wanted to find a graphic designer to create a cartoonish cover but we were unable to find one in time for our release. We are planning to release the single on all major platforms.

I was unavailable to get a snip- it of the mastered track.

Week 5-

I am so proud to announce that our song has been released on Spotify and iTunes.

I was not expecting the song to be released so fast as you normally have to wait a couple of days for it to upload onto these platforms.

People have been so supportive of our release and have been steaming and sharing the single. I will copy in some of the support we have been getting on instagram.

I feel as though NewFoundjungle was bit quick to release our single and we Definitely could have done some more research and graphing before putting out there.

I probably won't be working with him again as he has moved away and it would be really hard to see each-other, so I have decided to do some research on promoting a single; as I think it would benefit me as an artist.

`

This Video shows the importance of planning and releasing a single. it is about gaining attraction, gaining momentum and thinking about the purpose of releasing your single e.g (what you want to get out of it and achieve).

Most bands/artists release a single and then have no clue what to do next, this video helps pre-empt those feelings.

the video explains that you should be thinking 10 songs ahead before releasing the first single; it's all about speed and consistency.

The first song should be sweet and simple because most people find themselves doing too much to one song and the process becomes too long.

lead up time is important you need enough time to tell people about what you are doing and why you are doing it; promoting it little bit before and after releasing will do the trick, then you have got to start thinking about releasing the 2nd single.

The video is packed full of information and I would be writing a whole essay if I carried on. I think this video should be watched by all musicians as I think it is so important and helpful and holds key information.

This video gives you 10 tips on promoting a single after its been released.

question 1- what is it that you want your audience to do?

buy the single or listen to it because that is two very different things.

The video talks about measuring success, targets, and goals e.g sending your audience to platforms like iTunes/spotify to buy it therefor setting yourself a goal of selling 100 copy's.

once you've got the link to were you single lives you should be putting that everywhere (e.g on every promo post, in your bio, and on your facebook banner etc...)

It is also really helpful to create a music video or even a live video of your song to create more attraction, you could even just post a 30 second video of a verse and chorus, then putting a link in the caption to the full song could make a massive difference to your steams. visuals are also very helpful.

Evaluation

I am really pleased with the out-come of this project. It was really fun experimenting and exploring the production side of things, I managed to complete the final mix before the project was mastered, which i am very pleased about. It was really excited working with someone who has a similar music taste to me, as a result of this, NewFoundJungle introduced me to some artists that i'd never heard before and now can’t stop listening to. Even though we couldn't complete our studio sessions together we still managed to complete a song over just sending each other loops and stems. There are only 2 things that I would say i'm not too pleased about, and that would be my lyric writing; I feel as though I was a bit rushed and didn’t really get the time to really think about what i was writing, as a result of this, the lyrics are quite poor and don’t really mean anything to me personally.

The 2nd point would be our planning for the release; I feel as though the song release was rushed and we could have promoted the song in better ways, having said that the support that we got for the song was unreal and I really didn’t expect people to react like they did. ‘How Could You’ is now out there on all major platforms and I can finally call myself a proper artist as a result of this.
